US residents with UK connections
Life in the United States does not sever your ties to Britain. We look after the UK side of your affairs: pensions, property and inheritances, so it works alongside your American life.
Plenty of people settle in the United States while keeping meaningful connections to the UK: a workplace or personal pension, a property, an inheritance, or simply family and future plans that still point across the Atlantic.
Managing that from the US is harder than it looks. UK institutions may be reluctant to deal with an overseas resident, and the tax treatment of UK pensions, rental income and capital gains interacts with the US system in ways that are easy to get wrong.
We act as the UK-facing part of your financial team, coordinating with your US advisers so that your affairs on both sides fit together rather than pull against each other.
Where we help
- UK pensions
- Reviewing workplace and personal pensions, and planning how and when to draw them while US resident.
- UK property
- Advice around holding, letting or selling UK property, with the US tax consequences considered alongside.
- Inheritances
- Helping you deal with inherited UK assets in a way that is efficient across both tax regimes.
- Coordination
- Working with your US adviser and tax preparers so the UK and US sides of your plan stay aligned.
Common questions
- I have a UK pension but live in the US. What are my options?
- That depends on the type of scheme and your plans. UK pensions can often be left in place, but drawing from them while US resident raises tax and treaty questions worth planning in advance.
- I have inherited UK property or investments. What should I do first?
- Understand the UK and US tax positions before acting. Selling, transferring or retaining an inherited asset each has different consequences across the two systems.
- Can you coordinate with my US adviser and accountant?
- Yes. We frequently work as the UK-facing part of a wider team, coordinating with your US adviser and tax preparers so the whole picture holds together.
